SUCCESSION PLANNING

Once you have built a sustainable practice you may want to think about your own long-term plans in the industry. If you are able to establish a trusted brand for your business, which is independent of yourself, it may be attractive to manage succession in the business without having to sell it. Or you may decide to continue working only with a subset of the client base. By remaining on board you can continue to have some control of the practice and share in its income flow, while being involved in the running of the business only to the extent that you desire.

If you reach the point where you do want to exit the industry, it is important to transfer ownership to an appropriate person. You need to find a successor who will have the same concern for your clients and will follow broadly the financial planning process that your clients have bought into and become accustomed to. Careful transition of ownership will mean clients retain their trust in the business and the new owner’s capabilities.
